Wave Runner Aqua Sneaker Tested On A Dive Trip In The Florida Keys
Any diver knows that before you can be down there in a Zen-like state blowing bubbles with the fishes, it takes some topside prep.
Having the right kit has everything to do with experiencing the underwater world in comfort. And as a diver who wants to feel as good underwater as I do when I’m dry, I am constantly streamlining mine.
Any new piece of gear I can find that makes diving—and traveling with dive gear—that much easier is a big win in my book. Which is why I was thrilled to discover the stylish new Wave Runner Aqua Sneaker, in styles for both men and women, that can take you from topside fun on dry land to underwater adventures in a flash when slipped into your scuba fin.
I tried out the water shoes during a recent dive and drive road trip through the Florida Keys, and once I had them on I pretty much forgot about any other footwear I’d packed for the week—they segue that seamlessly from surf to turf.

Weighing an average of 10 ounces, a pair of these shoes is so light you’ll barely even register the addition of them in your dive bag. I tried them in place of dive booties, slipping them easily into my fins and cinching the fin strap over the shoe’s light, durable polyester mesh that comes up just above the ankle. They’re so comfortable to dive with you won’t even notice them—but it’s when you surface that having this shoe on really makes a difference.
The Wave Runner Aqua Sneakers mesh exterior combines with multiple drainage holes in the inner and outer soles, so the shoes never feel sloshy inside. And a slip-resistant material on the outside toe and heel make them perfect for wandering comfortably around a wet dive boat (and stepping up onto the gunwales to catch some sun on the bow during a surface interval, as I’m prone to do whenever feasible). The shoes com in women’s and men’s sizing with no-tie laces that make for a perfectly cinched foot-feel. And the flexible outer soles give them an almost barefoot feel that makes them both comfortable and functional for light exercise including yoga and walking (they work wonders on walking across hot sand after a shore dive, too).

I really love the bright fun, colors of these shoes, too (who doesn’t want to look cute in your kit?), including coral red, neon yellow and hot pink along with more subdued options like black and navy. And while I might not wear my Wave Runner Aqua Sneakers out clubbing, they pair perfectly with jean shorts or a sundress for a cute color pop in my beachy wardrobe. My husband has sported his both with board shorts and out on the town, too—they’re that versatile.
And they couldn’t be easier to take care of and keep fresh after a dive. After using them in the ocean, mud or anywhere else you’re playing, simply remove the sole, rinse the shoes with fresh water and leave them out to dry for another day of adventures on, in and around the water.
